Annual 2007 'Australis' E-news

Hi all,

After a successful last season, this coming summer has filled up quickly, but there are still a few opportunities left..... for more read on.

Last season in 06/07 Ben was put into the skipper’s seat onboard 'Australis' & managed to push further south than we have ever been before. On the last trip of the season ‘Australis’ supported a New Zealand mountaineering party who climbed an amazing total of 12 peaks along the Antarctic Peninsula as well as many other ski-tours & ice climbs. A truly exceptional achievement!!
Our new sea kayaks have proved to be a great success providing an even closer experience with the elements & nature.
‘Australis’ is now in Ushuaia being prepared for next season when we plan to explore the spectacular Tierra del Fuego, including the Magellan Straits. From September through December we are supporting a BBC film unit producing a 10-part series documentary, before we head south to the Antarctic Peninsula to see all that the 07/08 summer has to offer.
Finally in April 2008, we plan to sail north to Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland & Nova Scotia, where we will explore as far north as we can & mix with the locals, soaking up the history along the way. You can join us & enjoy an experience of a lifetime, just read our
Greenland page for more details or contact us direct.

Regards,

Roger.

Ocean Facts + Figures.
Did you know Polar bears actually have black skin! The polar bear's hair appears white to us because the rough inner surfaces of the hollow hairs reflect visible light. Ultraviolet light from the sun travels down the core of each hair where it is soaked up and stored by the bear's black skin.

Underwater Ice Photography.
During the past several Antarctic seasons I have been working on an Underwater Ice Photography project aimed at producing a series of limited run Fine Art prints.
I only have one image in the gallery so far but this is the entrée of what is to come when I have a show of my own.
If you are around Sydney & have the time, drop into the Underwater Australia gallery in Surry Hills, where the work is a part of the permanent collection.
